Is the Toyota Kluger Comfortable to Drive?

The Toyota Kluger is a well-rounded SUV that feels rock-solid on the road while remaining user-friendly around town.

With the Kluger range moving to a hybrid-only offering, buyers pick up a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit paired with three electric motors; two of which sit over the rear axle while one resides at the front.

Combined power outputs for the Kluger stand at a healthy 184kW, though torque figures aren’t specified by Toyota.

Power is thrown to all four wheels via a CVT automatic transmission while braked towing capacities for the entire MY25 Kluger range stand at 2,000kg.

The Kluger’s power delivery is silky-smooth thanks to the electrical assistance which takes care of your momentum off the line, with the petrol unit kicking into life seamlessly to provide extra power as you pick up the pace.

The CVT automatic isn’t the most engaging transmission on the market, though Toyota has nailed the brief when it comes to the refinement of this transmission.

For such a substantial package, Toyota has also done well when it comes to making the Kluger a user-friendly package to drive around town.

There’s no escaping the substantial footprint, though Toyota’s steering rack is easy to throw around while the suspension works wonders ironing out smaller bumps around town.

Pick up the pace and you’ll find the Kluger isn’t the sportiest SUV on the market, though it provides excellent comfort levels on rougher roads thanks to a capable suspension package.

There’s also confidence-inspiring levels of grip thanks to the eFour all-wheel drive system, with Toyota’s hybrid system powering the front wheels while bumbling around town to help save fuel.

On the highway the Kluger proves itself as a lovely long-distance tourer, with its four-paw grip, quiet cabin and ample power for overtaking that make it one of the most versatile and user-friendly large SUVs on the market.

Is the Toyota Kluger Fuel Efficient?

The Toyota Kluger provides buyers with exceptional fuel economy figures for such a large and practical SUV package.

On a combined cycle, all members of the Kluger range are rated at just 5.6L per 100km.

Around town, Toyota says fuel economy figures will increase to 6.0L per 100km while time spent on the highway will drop fuel use back down to 5.6L per 100km.

Is the Toyota Kluger Practical and Spacious?

Toyota has no shortage of experience when it comes to providing families with a comfortable and practical interior layout and the Kluger upholds that rock-solid reputation.

Step inside and it’s all familiar Toyota, with a straight-forward cabin design that proves both practical and user-friendly thanks to a simple layout and excellent ergonomics.

There’s a fully-adjustable driver’s seat and both tilt and reach adjustment in the steering wheel that can accommodate a wide range of shapes and sizes, with some nice soft materials on the common touch points.

The tallest of drivers will not have an issue in the front of the Kluger’s cabin thanks to a tall roofline and large windows while the elevated driving position offers a great view out at your surroundings.

It’s not the flashiest or most tech-heavy cabin layout for the segment, though the addition of some more premium materials in the Grande helps to make things a bit more special up front.

In terms of storage, the Kluger is a strong performer.

There’s a large centre console bin with storage inside, a large pair of cup holders and a storage tray behind the gear lever with a cut-out for smartphones and another little storage stash beneath the climate control dials that swallow up a tonne of loose items.

The passenger also picks up a glovebox flanked by an additional tier of storage above while the massive door bins won’t have an issue swallowing up a large water bottle.

Move to the second row and you’ll find there’s no shortage of acreage in the back of the Kluger.

Adults can comfortably sit behind a tall driver without banging their knees while headroom is solid thanks to the lofty roofline, proving a great place for kids to kick back on a long journey.

Rear passengers can also recline their seat for added comfort while sliding on a set of rails for extra legroom or to help accommodate those behind.

The Kluger’s second row comes packaged with USB charging ports, air vents, a folding armrest with cupholders, door bins, as well as a pair of ISOFIX anchors and three top tether mounts for child seats.

Accessing the Kluger’s third row is relatively simple by folding the 60:40 split second-row seats, though accommodation back here is only really suited to kids, though it definitely gets the job done and asserts the Kluger as a particularly family-friendly seven-seat SUV.

How Big is the Toyota Kluger’s Boot?

The Toyota Kluger offers a healthy amount of boot space for a seven-seat SUV.

With seven people in place across all three rows of seats, there’s 241L of boot capacity on offer, enough to accommodate a substantial supermarket run or dash to school.

Fold the third row down and the Kluger’s boot measures 552L in a five-seat layout which expands to a maximum of 1,150L with both rows folded.

While there’s no under-floor storage, the Kluger does boast a full-sized spare tyre underneath which is a particularly nice touch in a world filled with space-saver tyres and tyre repair kits.

Is the Toyota Kluger Safe?

Toyota bundles a long list of safety equipment with the Kluger range, reserving just one key feature for the range-topping Grande variant.

As standard, all Kluger variants come packaged with autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, as well as junction assist.

There’s also blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, lane-trace and emergency steering assist, a rear-view camera with front & rear parking sensors, traffic sign detection and seven airbags.

Upgrading to the flagship Kluger Grande adds a surround-view monitor.

Does the Toyota Kluger Have an ANCAP Safety Rating?

The Toyota Kluger has scored a five-star ANCAP safety rating after scoring the following marks in 2021 testing.

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 90%

  • Child Occupant Protection: 88%

  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 76%

Toyota’s capped-price servicing for the Kluger range outlines $265 per visit, which over the coure of five years, equates to $1,325 which is mighty impressive.

Our Verdict: Is the Toyota Kluger Worth it?

No matter how close you point the microscope, the Toyota Kluger comes out as a super strong contender in the large SUV segment.

With the help of a particularly smooth and extremely fuel-efficient hybrid engine, the Kluger is a wonderful daily driver and long distance tourer while the practical cabin makes light work of a large family.

There’s no escaping the fact that Kluger prices have climbed considerably in recent years, though it’s worth noting that this coincided with the lineup moving to a hybrid-only affair and there’s still a great value proposition on offer in the GX.

As a result, we think that no shortlist for a family-friendly SUV is complete without a mention of the Toyota Kluger.
