What Features & Specs Does the Volvo EX40 Have?

Volvo’s entry-level EX40 Ultra Single Motor and Twin Motor Extended Range each pick up a lengthy equipment list.

The list of gear includes a set of 20-inch alloys, automatic and active-cornering LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, textile and microtech upholstery with heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a powered boot lift and a surround-view monitor with front & rear parking sensors.

Buyers also pick up a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry & start, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless smartphone charger, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and Volvo’s new signature topography interior layout.

For those upgrading to the EX40 Black Edition, you can expect to pick up a set of 20-inch alloys finished in black as well as a black finish for the upgraded suede and microtech upholstery.

Connectivity & Infotainment Features

Volvo packages the EX40 lineup with a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that sits atop the dashboard, flanked by a set of air vents.

Volvo’s infotainment system offers the usual mix of AM/FM and DAB+ digital radio and runs an Android Automotive operating system with built-in Google services, offering Google Assistant features, apps via the Google Play store and natively running Google Maps with live traffic updates.

This also offers over-the-air software updates and app-based remote services that allow you to lock the doors, track the vehicle’s location or pre-heat the cabin before you set off.

The EX40 is packaged with a 14-speaker sound system courtesy of Harman/Kardon, while buyers also pick up a five-year subscription to Google Services with the purchase of an EX40.

Does the Volvo EX40 Have Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto?

Volvo is yet to confirm whether or not the EX40’s infotainment system will be updated with wireless Apple CarPlay support.

For reference, the outgoing XC40 Recharge offered both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, though it required you to bring your own USB-C cable in the absence of wireless smartphone mirroring.

Is the Volvo EX40’s Electric Motor Powerful?

The Volvo EX40 range comes with a choice of two powertrain options.

The entry-level EX40 Ultra Single Motor Extended Range picks up an electric motor that kicks out 175kW of power and 420Nm of torque to the rear wheels only.

If you’re looking for a bit more power, Volvo has you covered with the EX40 Twin Motor range which picks up an additional electric motor and lifts power outputs to 300kW while torque figures stand at an imposing 660Nm.

EX40 Twin Motor variants also pick up a confidence-inspiring all-wheel drive system.

  • EX40 Single Motor: 175kW / 420Nm

  • EX40 Twin Motor: 300kW / 660Nm

How Far Can the Volvo EX40 Drive on a Single Charge?

The great news for potential EX40 buyers is that Volvo is now packaging both variants with an 82kWh battery pack.

This means that there’s more range in the base model, which previously received a 69kWh battery pack.

Volvo says that owners of the EX40 Single Motor can expect to get up to 520km of range between charges, while the more powerful EX40 Twin Motor range can travel up to 500km between charges, according to the WLTP test cycle.

  • EX40 Single Motor Range - 520km

  • EX40 Twin Motor Range - 500km

Is the Volvo EX40 Practical and Spacious?

While the EX40 is a new name, the platform and interior cabin remain the same as the XC40 Recharge.

This means buyers can expect a sleek and stylish interior cabin that features some of the trademark Swedish minimalism we’ve come to love from the brand, blended with some nice, practical touches.

The tall roofline means that taller drivers won’t have much of an issue with headroom, while Volvo’s textile and microtech upholstery picks up some suede inserts in more premium variants.

In terms of storage, there’s a rubber-lined tray hiding behind the gear lever that doubles as a wireless charging port, a pair of cupholders, added storage inside the folding armrest and bottle holders inside the doors.

Move to the rear of the cabin and the EX40 holds up well as a small SUV that can accommodate adults in the second row.

There’s not acres of legroom on offer, though with a little sacrificing up front, adults can sit reasonably comfortably in the back, which is surprisingly difficult in the small SUV segment.

Amenities in the rear include a set of air vents, charging ports, heated rear seats, map pockets and door bins.

In terms of cargo, the EX40’s boot measures 419L with the rear seats standing, expanding to a maximum of 1,295L.

There’s also a separate layer of storage beneath the boot floor to swallow up loose clutter and keep your charging cables and valuables safe from eyesight.

Is it Safe?

Volvo has long been synonymous with safety and the latest EX40 looks to uphold that reputation.

The EX40 boasts a long list of tech that looks set to make it one of the most competitive small SUVs when it comes to clever, active safety features.

The list includes autonomous emergency braking with vulnerable road user protection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-departure alerts with lane-keep assist, a surround-view monitor with front & rear parking sensors and curtain airbags.

Does the Volvo EX40 Have an ANCAP Safety Rating?

The Volvo EX40 is yet to be officially tested by ANCAP and remains unrated.

For reference, the previous-generation Volvo XC40 Recharge picked up a five-star ANCAP safety rating after testing in 2018 that has since expired.

In those tests, though, the XC40 Recharge scored the following marks.

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 97%

  • Child Occupant Protection: 84%

  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 71%

  • Safety Assist: 78%

What Warranty Does the Volvo EX40 Come With?

Volvo offers the 2025 EX40 range with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.

The EX40’s battery and high-voltage components are also backed by a separate eight-year/160,000-kilometre warranty.

Buyers also pick up complimentary servicing for a total of five years, as well as five years of roadside assistance thrown in to help sweeten the deal.

Service intervals for the Volvo EX40 range stand at 12 months or 15,000 kilometres, whichever elapses first.

Our Verdict: Is the Volvo EX40 Worth it?

There’s a lot to like about the refreshed Volvo EX40 range which now boasts a larger battery pack with more range in the base model, providing more value at the base of the range than the outgoing XC40 Recharge lineup.

With a lengthy equipment list, tonnes of active safety equipment, a sleek interior cabin with decent rear accommodation and a healthy amount of boot space, the EX40 hits the ground running with the fundamentals very much covered.

If you’re looking at your best options for a small, battery-electric SUV, be sure to add the EX40 to your shortlist.
