The Nissan Navara is one of the titans of the segment, famed for its tough platform, rock-solid value proposition and mighty off-road Warrior flagship versions.

For 2024, the Nissan Navara lineup remains virtually unchanged, with no noticeable price hikes applied to the range which features a choice of single cab, king cab and dual-cab ute options.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that Nissan looks ready to replace the Navara with a brand-new version, likely to arrive in 2025, so are you better off waiting for the upgrade or getting behind the wheel now?

Let’s take a look at the 2024 Nissan Navara range to see how it performs and stacks up against its rivals to find out.

What Features & Specs Does the Nissan Navara Have?

Nissan’s entry-level Navara SL comes riding on a set of 17-inch steel wheels and receives halogen headlights, cloth upholstery with vinyl floors for single & dual-cab variants, while king cabs pick up carpeted floors, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, power-adjustable side mirrors, a full-sized spare wheel, a rear-view camera & tailgate assist in pick-up versions, a locking rear differential, hill-start assist, trailer sway control and hill descent control in 4x4 versions, as well as a full-sized spare tyre.

Upgrading to the Navara SL Warrior adds all-terrain tyres, a 40mm suspension lift, tow bar, bull bar, an LED lightbar, underbody bash plate, GVM upgrade - to 3,250kg - as well as revised springs and dampers, flared wheel arches, tub liner and all-weather floor mats.

Over the entry-level SL, the Navara ST picks up 17-inch alloys as well as LED head, tail and fog lights, a powered rear window, a stainless steel sports bar, a leather-wrapped steering wheel & gear lever, carpeted floors as well as a drive selector and off-road monitor in 4x4 automatic variants.

Stepping up to the Navara ST-X adds a set of 18-inch alloys, a double tube sports bar, a towbar, tub liner, keyless entry & start, dual-zone climate control, sliding tie-down points in the tray, full-sized alloy spare wheel and tyre pressure monitoring.

Moving up to the Navara Pro-4X adds a set of 17-inch black alloys wrapped in all-terrain tyres, black wheel arches, roof rails, side steps, front grille, side mirrors and door handles, a black sports bar, leather upholstery with power-adjustable and heated front seats labelled with Pro-4X embroidery.

Finally, the flagship Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior receives a set of Cooper Discoverer all-terrain tyres with a full-sized alloy spare, 40mm suspension lift kit, a light bar, red bash plates, 100kg GVM upgrade, upgraded springs and dampers, Warrior decals, a winch-compatible bullbar and Warrior interior embroidery.

Nissan Navara Connectivity & Infotainment Features

One key area that the Nissan Navara range can’t help but show some serious signs of its age is the interior technology suite.

The entire range, from the value-pick Navara SL, to the flagship Pro-4X Warrior, comes packaged with the same 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that, in base form fits the bill, but for the range-topper, struggles to stay competitive in 2024.

The 8.0-inch display offers Bluetooth connectivity in base form, though DAB+ digital radio and satellite navigation are reserved for the Navara ST, with a six-speaker sound system included on all models, but no upgraded HIFI on offer for buyers splurging out.

Does the Nissan Navara Have Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto?

It should come as no surprise that used alongside Nissan’s rather basic infotainment system, the Nissan Navara does not offer wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity.

Having said that, the fact the Navara range offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at all should be cause for celebration, with the cabled USB connection helping to ensure a more stable, uninterrupted experience.

Is the Nissan Navara Comfortable to Drive?

While it’s certainly not the leader of the segment, the driving experience on offer in the Nissan Navara is one of an honest workhorse that charms over time.

Under the bonnet, the Navara range features a choice of two turbo-diesel units.

The entry-level Navara SL picks up a 2.3-litre turbocharged diesel unit producing 120kW of power and 403Nm of torque, which is paired with a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission.

The majority of the Navara range gets a more powerful twin-turbocharged 2.3-litre diesel that pushes out 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque, meaning it’s just shy of flagship utes.

Behind the wheel, the Navara’s turbo-diesel unit stretches out further than the average, offering torque all the way up to 5,500rpm which is quite a feat for a diesel engine.

This means that while it’s down on power compared to key rivals, the Navara’s rock-solid engine doesn’t shy away from a challenge.

On the road, the Navara is super well-behaved thanks to its coil spring suspension at all four corners, which means it feels more refined around town and planted as you pick up speed, even when it’s not loaded up with gear to tie down the rear axle.

The steering wheel is noticeably heavier than major rivals, though it remains manageable when parking or making a three-point turn around town, and offers tangible feedback through the wheel as you pick up the pace.

All things considered, the Navara is actually a bit of a peach on your usual mix of town and country driving, confidently ticking the day-to-day boxes that buyers look for - even with (or thanks to) its old-school underpinnings.

How Much Can the Nissan Navara Tow and Carry in the Tray?

    • Braked Towing Capacity: 3,500kg (across the range)

    • Payload Figures: 875 - 1,282kg

    • GVM: 2,910 - 3,250kg

    • GCM: 5,910kg

    • Maximum Tow Ball Weight: 350kg

    Is it Fuel Efficient?

Fuel economy figures for the 2024 Nissan Navara lineup range from 7.2 to 8.1L per 100km on a combined cycle.

The most fuel-efficient member of the Navara range is the entry-level SL Single Cab & Dual-Cab pick-up variants which both receive a single turbocharger for the 2.3-litre diesel unit, a 4x2 system and a manual transmission.

This allows the SL 4x2 Single & Dual-Cab pick-up to post the most fuel-efficient figures of 7.2L per 100km on a combined cycle.

Opting for the more powerful, twin-turbocharged 2.3-litre unit powering the rest of the Navara range means you’ll consume between 7.5L per 100km in manual 4x4 versions, increasing to 8.1L/100km in the thirstiest 4x4 automatic variants.

These figures mean that the Navara is quite respectable when it comes to fuel efficiency and doesn’t penalise buyers looking for more respectable power and torque figures in the twin-turbocharged 2.3-litre diesel unit.

    Is it Practical and Spacious?

The Nissan Navara’s interior design is one of the most telling signs of its ageing platform, though space and practicality remain respectable for the segment.

Up front, the Navara’s cockpit offers a decent of visibility over the tall dashboard thanks to the elevated driving position.

While there’s a decent range of adjustment in the seating position, the lack of reach adjustment in the steering wheel column may prove a noticeable hindrance for some drivers.

In most variants, the dashboard and centre console are a sea of black plastics that doesn’t look fantastic considering how far some of its rivals have come in terms of packaging, though it’s an honest and ergonomic setup.

All the important functions are right where you’d expect them to be, with physical buttons ergonomically positioned to keep things as simple as possible.

Storage options in the front of the Navara cabin include a tray behind the gear lever with a wireless charging pad, a pair of cupholders, added storage inside the folding centre armrest, a glovebox and bottle holders inside the door sills.

Move to the rear of the cabin and, in dual-cab form, the Navara isn’t the most spacious in the segment for rear occupants, though there’s more than enough for adults to get reasonably comfortable.

The Navara dual-cab’s second row also offers a healthy amount of headroom, as well as ISOFIX anchors and top tether mounts to accommodate a range of forward and rear-facing child seats.

How Big is the Nissan Navara’s Tray?

    • Length: 1,509mm (Dual-Cab)

    • Length: 1,851mm (King Cab)

    • Width: 1,560mm

    • Width between arches: 1,134mm

    • Height: 519mm

    Is it Safe?

Safety equipment in the Nissan Navara range is a bit of a mixed bag, with base models struggling to compete with key rivals on technology lists.

As standard, the entry-level Nissan Navara is packed with autonomous emergency braking with forward collision alerts, a rear-view camera in pickup variants, driver attention alerts and seven airbags.

If you’re looking for active safety gear, you’ll need to upgrade to the Navara ST or above which pick up blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-keep assist with lane departure alerts, rear parking sensors and a surround-view monitor.

All things considered, Nissan needs to start expanding on the base model’s safety equipment lists before it can compete with the best in the segment.

Does the Nissan Navara Have an ANCAP Safety Rating?

The Nissan Navara range has seen its previous five-star ANCAP safety rating expire in December, 2022.

This means the current Navara remains untested by ANCAP and is unlikely to be put through its paces until a new generation arrives potentially in 2025.

For reference, the Navara’s expired five-star ANCAP safety rating was achieved after posting a frontal offset score of 14.01 out of 16, full-marks for the side and pole impact tests and an overall score of 35.01 out of 37.

What Warranty Does the Nissan Navara Come With?

Nissan packages the Navara range with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre factory warranty.

The company also offers six years of capped-price servicing costs which are quite pricey when put under the microscope.

Servicing costs for Navara Manual variants totals $4,249 over the course of six services, dropping slightly to $4,203 for Navara Automatic variants.

Thankfully, though, service intervals for the Navara range stand at a lengthy 20,000-kilometres of 12 months, whichever elapses first.

Our Verdict: Is the Nissan Navara Worth it?

There’s a lot of truth to the adage ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ when it comes to the Nissan Navara which, in spite of its age, remains a very competitive ute in 2024.

With gutsy performance off-road, surprisingly refined on-road manners and a jam-packed list of options for a range of budgets, it’s hard to ignore the Navara’s honesty and versatility.

While a next-gen Navara will build upon the current Navara’s strengths, it will likely come with some significant price rises so, if you’re looking to pounce, we can only encourage you to get behind the wheel of the Navara for a test drive.
