If you’re in the market for a big, family-friendly SUV package, the Mazda CX-70 has likely popped up on your radar.

The CX-70 sits as one of the company’s latest SUV packages designed to show what the company can provide with its latest-generation family movers.

While Mazda’s naming structure for its latest-gen SUV lineup can be a little complicated, the recipe for the CX-70 is pretty simple.

It’s a large, premium SUV package that shares a platform with the flagship CX-90 that can fit seven people inside, but elects for a super spacious five-seat layout instead.

That means it stacks up as one of the most luxurious and practical large SUVs, benefits from six-cylinder powertrains and picks up Mazda’s typically lovely interior designs.

With no shortage of competition, though, just how well does the Mazda CX-70 stack up as a worthwhile large SUV option for Aussie families? Let’s take a closer look to find out.

What Features & Specs Does the Mazda CX-70 Have?

Mazda’s CX-70 GT range comes riding on a set of 21-inch alloys and receives adaptive LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, leather upholstery with power adjustable, heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel, three-zone climate control, a hands-free boot lift, panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a surround-view monitor with front & rear parking sensors.

Stepping up to the flagship CX-70 Azami range adds body-coloured wheel arches, Nappa leather upholstery with ventilated front seats, a frameless rear-view mirror and ambient lighting.

Mazda also offers the SP package for Azami variants which is priced at $3,500 and adds tanned Nappa leather upholstery with a suede dashboard and a two-tone steering wheel design.

Connectivity & Infotainment Features

The Mazda CX-70 comes packaged with a 12.3-inch infotainment system that sits neatly atop the dashboard.

It’s a crisp display that can only be controlled via Mazda’s rotary dial on the centre console, though the touchscreen can be used while Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is in action.

Mazda’s 12.3-inch infotainment system is bundled with AM/FM and DAB+ digital radio as well as satellite navigation, with sound provided by a 12-speaker Bose Hifi system.

Does the Mazda CX-70 Have Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto?

Buyers will be pleased to know that the MY25 Mazda CX-70 lineup offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.

Sitting as a latest-generation product, the CX-70’s infotainment system supports smartphone mirroring for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ecosystems both wirelessly and via a USB-C cable.

Is the Mazda CX-70 Comfortable to Drive?

The CX-70 is a big and bold package that offers a surprisingly sporty nature for such a large package.

In terms of engines, buyers have two mild-hybrid inline six-cylinder options to pick from.

The most affordable engine option is Mazda’s G50e unit, a 3.3-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol with 48-volt mild-hybrid tech that pushes out 254kW of power and 500Nm of torque to an all-wheel drive system.

Spending a little extra lands you with the D50e engine, a 3.3-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder diesel unit that pushes out 187kW of power, but more torque than its petrol equivalent, totalling 550Nm.

Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission which offers smooth shifts between ratios but is prone to some shuttery moments while sometimes lurching when taking off from the line.

Both also offer 2,500kg of braked towing capacity and payload figures of 505 - 506kg for the petrol and diesel, respectively.

Acceleration is very healthy for such a large, heavy package, with Mazda’s choice to offer six-cylinder engines providing buyers with ample power.

Mazda’s petrol engine is more athletic off the line, though the D50e diesel is the better pick for torque, offering a more effortless and relaxed driving nature which fits the bill for such a large, family-friendly package.

On that note, the CX-70 with its wide body design makes for great interior space, but means the CX-70 can be a handful to park and navigate in tight quarters.

You’ll have to be wary of the large turning circle, though the CX-70’s steering rack is relatively easy to throw around and doesn’t prove too much of a chore to park.

On a jaunt around town, you’ll quickly notice that the CX-70 rides firmer than you might expect for a family-friendly SUV and doesn’t eat up the bumps quite as much as most of its rivals.

The flip side of this, however, is that on the open road, Mazda’s rear-biased all-wheel drive system combined with the firm suspension package and sharp steering rack means that the CX-70 is quite the corner carver.

There’s no hiding its substantial weight in the corners, though Mazda has done well to give the CX-70 a sprinkling of sporty DNA.

On the highway, the CX-70 is a lovely long-distance tourer - so long as the roads are relatively smooth, making for an interesting and surprisingly sporty large SUV package overall.

Is the Mazda CX-70 Fuel Efficient?

Mazda offers its inline six-cylinder engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid tech which effectively turns off the engine when it’s not needed.

As a result, it’s more fuel efficient than you might expect from a 3.3-litre inline-six engine, but it’s not game-changing.

The G50e is rated at 8.1L/100km on a combined cycle, which drops to 5.4L/100km in the case of the D50e.

Around town, the G50e petrol engine consumes a claimed 10.3L/100km which drops to 6.9L/100km on the highway.

The D50e diesel engine is rated at 5.8L/100km around town while time spent on the highway will see you sipping 5.3L/100km.

This means that if outright fuel efficiency is a top priority, you’re best served spending a little bit extra on Mazda’s D50e diesel engine which is significantly more efficient than its petrol sibling.

  • G50e Combined Cycle Economy: 8.1L/100km

  • D50e Combined Cycle Economy: 5.4L/100km

Is the Mazda CX-70 Practical and Spacious?

You bet it is - the cabin is massive.

The Mazda CX-70 is actually a five-seat version of the three-row CX-90, which means interior space, comfort and boot space in particular are all a high priority.

Up front, things are super clean and refined, with Mazda confidently asserting itself as one of the best in the game when it comes to interior designs.

While the centre console is packed with buttons, Mazda has done well to keep things clean in front of the driver and atop the dashboard, with lovely materials used throughout.

Step inside and you’re greeted with large, plush seats with power adjustment and virtually endless headroom, making the CX-70 a perfect option for tall drivers and front passengers while the wide cabin makes it feel immense inside.

Visibility is also great thanks to the tall roofline, while a panoramic sunroof as standard means there’s no shortage of light entering the cabin.

In terms of storage, there’s a healthy range of practical touches on offer inside the CX-70, though it’s not the best in the segment for swallowing up loose items.

Storage options include a tray sitting behind the gear lever, a pair of cupholders hiding beneath a retractable cover and a split-fold centre console armrest that isn’t quite as deep as we were hoping.

There’s also a glovebox and decent-sized bottle holders inside the door sills.

Move to the second row and the CX-70’s rear accommodation is fantastic.

Adults will have absolutely no problem getting comfortable in the second row which offers great legroom and headroom alike, with the added bonus of a sliding and reclining bench seat to get super comfortable on long journeys.

Thanks to the wide cabin, you can seat three people side-to-side in the rear of the CX-70 without much of an issue.

Amenities like USB-C charging ports, a folding armrest with cup holders, dedicated climate control vents and window shades mean the rear seat experience in the CX-70 is mighty impressive.

For the parents out there, the CX-70’s rear bench seat features two pairs of ISOFIX anchors and three top tether mounts on the seatback, making it a supremely family-friendly proposition.

How Big is the Mazda CX-70 Boot?

As you might imagine, with the CX-70’s platform borrowed from the massive CX-90 while ripping out the third-row seats, boot space is immense.

With the second-row seats standing, there’s 589L of boot space on offer when measuring up to the top of the seats or 923L when measuring up to the roof.

Fold down the second-row seats and you’ve got 2,015L of space for cargo, sports equipment and camping gear, asserting the CX-70 as a mighty practical SUV package.

  • Boot Space Minimum: 589L

  • Boot Space Maximum: 2,015L

Is it Safe?

Mazda bundles in a long list of active safety gear with the CX-70 range.

The lengthy safety equipment list is headlined by a forward and reverse autonomous emergency braking system with junction assist, as well as pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, front & rear cross-traffic alerts and lane-keep assistance.

Buyers also pick up driver attention monitoring, emergency lane-keep, safe exit warnings, tyre pressure monitoring and a surround-view monitor with front & rear parking sensors.

The CX-70 is yet to be officially put through its paces in ANCAP testing and remains unrated.

What Warranty Does the Mazda CX-70 Come With?

Mazda offers the CX-70 with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.

The company offers three- and five-year pre-paid servicing packages for the CX-70 with both the G50e petrol and D50e diesel engines.

Three years’ worth of servicing for the G50e petrol totals $1,663, rising to $3,436 for five years, while the diesel is slightly cheaper to service, costing $2,148 for three years and $3,298 for five years.

Service intervals drop from 12 months or 15,000-kilometres in the case of the G50e petrol down to 10,000-kilometres for the D50e diesel, which is something to keep in mind.

Our Verdict: Is the Mazda CX-70 Worth it?

Mazda’s CX-70 is a large, powerful and immensely spacious SUV package that offers a first-class interior experience for five people and virtually endless boot space.

As a result, it’s a wonderful family car if you don’t need a three-row package for seven people and one that benefits from a lovely interior design, long equipment lists and surprisingly sporty handling.

The CX-70’s sporty nature does, however, detract slightly from its ride comfort around town, so we’d highly encourage you to get behind the wheel for a test drive to see if it suits your needs.

While we would certainly like to see a more cost-effective entry point into the CX-70 range, it stands as a strong contender in the large SUV segment and certainly deserves attention.
