Is it Comfortable to Drive?

Mechanically, the Haval H6 GT is the same as the standard H6 SUV which has made quite the impression since its introduction, particularly when you factor in the very accessible asking price.

Under the bonnet of the H6 GT you’ll find a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 150kW of power and 320Nm of torque which translates to a healthy amount of acceleration and performance on the road.

It’s perfectly suited to those looking for a town cruiser or work commuter thanks to its lightweight steering that makes low-speed turns a simple task, although the rear blindspots are very noticeable when you’re parking.

One of the only real gripes of the Haval H6 GT is the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) which can be a bit hesitant to change gears at times and offers some of the lurching you’ll find from other DCTs at low speeds.

Other than that, though, the H6 GT is an impressive package on a mix of road surfaces here in Australia, with relatively soft suspension that irons out bumps and makes for a comfortable commuter.

Upgrading to the all-wheel drive Ultra adds a nice amount of stability to the package and is an important consideration for those looking to take their H6 GT on long distance tours, while the base model is a great little commuter.

Is it Practical and Spacious?

Up front, the Haval H6 GT gives the driver and front passenger a sleek and stylish cabin that offers a heap of storage options for families.

There’s a heap of headroom for the first row and a fully-adjustable driving position on offer, with the clever design eliminating most of the physical buttons in favour of controls via the large 10.25-inch infotainment system.

This uncluttered design has freed up a tonne of space that Haval has used for storage options that make the H6 GT a strong performer when it comes to practicality.

Up front you’ll find a large storage tray behind the gear switch, a pair of cupholders beside a compact storage tray, storage inside the folding arm rest and a clever storage area below the transmission tunnel that swallows up all the loose items you can throw at it.

Typically in a coupe-SUV, headroom can be a sticking point for taller passengers because of the sloping roofline design. In the H6 GT, though, you’ll find there’s a heap of headroom on offer in the second row, with acres of legroom that make for a very usable SUV.

The rear seats feature a pair of ISOFIX anchors, as well as its own set of air vents and USB charging points that will keep kids happy on long road trips.

Move to the boot of the H6 GT and you’ll find 392L of cargo storage available which expands to 1,392L with the rear seats folded down, which is significantly less than the standard H6 but very usable for a family-load of luggage.

All up, the space and practicality of the Haval H6 is impressive, particularly for a coupe-style SUV which are typically far more cramped in the second row than a traditional SUV.

Is it Safe?

The Haval H6 GT has been awarded ANCAP’s maximum five-star safety rating, and comes packaged with a heap of active safety features.

During ANCAP testing, the H6 GT scored 90 per cent for adult protection, 88 per cent for child protection, 73 per cent for pedestrian protection and 81 per cent for its safety assist technologies.

As standard, the H6 GT receives autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warnings with lane-keep assistance, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera with front and rear parking sensors and seven airbags.

Is it Fuel Efficient?

The entry-level Haval H6 GT is rated at 7.5L per 100km on a combined cycle, with the all-wheel drive Ultra variant rated at 8.4L per 100km, positioning it right on par for a midsize SUV compared to its major rivals.
