Is the Ford Ranger Comfortable to Drive?
The latest-generation Ford Ranger has been quick to assert itself as one of the most capable, rugged yet user-friendly ute packages on the road.
Typically, a working-class ute is damn stiff when it’s not fully loaded over the rear axle.
Ford, though, has done a great job in making sure the Ranger feels relatively comfortable and planted to the road when it’s not fully loaded, making it arguably the most refined road-going ute on the market.
In terms of powertrains, buyers have no shortage of options to choose from in the Ranger.
There’s a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel producing 125kW of power and 405Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and your choice of a 4x2 or part-time 4x4 system.
There’s also a 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel that produces 154kW of power and 500Nm of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission and choice of 4x2 or part-time 4x4 systems.
Ford also offers a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel producing 184kW of power and 600Nm of torque, with the same ten-sped automatic but a full-time 4x4 system.
At the top of the engine range sits Ford’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost petrol for the Raptor which kicks out 292kW of power and 583Nm of torque which provides outlandish acceleration.
Whichever engine you opt for, the Ranger feels well-behaved for a work-focussed package and is relatively user-friendly around town thanks to its lightweight sterling rack and decent all-around visibility.
Base models with the heavy-duty suspension package are noticeably firmer, though the trade-off here is the extra payload capacity.
Hit a country road and the Ranger is an incredibly strong performer, with a suspension package that irons out bumps while mitigating severe body roll and tonnes of grunt from the engine lineup.
On the highway, the Ranger chews up kilometres and makes for one of the most versatile and arguably the most refined ute packages currently on the market.

Since the refresh, the Ford Ranger’s interior has come leaps and bounds in terms of interior accommodation.
Climb aboard and you’ll be pleased with just how much space is on offer in the cockpit, with tonnes of light and headroom available from the lofty roofline, making it a great shout for taller drivers.
The layout is modern, with the large, vertically-mounted infotainment system certainly giving the cabin a more high-tech vibe, while the uniquely shaped air vents and a plush steering wheel make things feel nice and premium.
On that note, even in base form the Ranger’s cabin looks pretty schmick for an entry-level version, while stepping up higher into the range adds more premium materials, larger displays and some coloured contrasts.
In terms of storage, the Ranger’s beefy centre console houses a large tray sitting behind the gear lever, a pair of cupholders and some added storage inside the large folding armrest.
There’s also a glovebox flanked by another flat storage tier sitting above and large door bins to eat up large bottles without an issue.
Move to the rear and Super Cab variants have a compact rear seating area with a couple of folding seats that get the job done for short trips to the worksite, but you wouldn’t want to spend too much time back there.
For family buyers, the Ranger in dual-cab form is a no-brainer, offering much more real estate in the second row, buoyed by great headroom for tall rear passengers.
The Ranger’s rear bench is able to fold up, with some added storage underneath, while a power outlet, air vents, and two pairs of ISOFIX anchors and three top tether mounts accommodate a range of forward and rear-facing child seats.
