Is it Comfortable to Drive?
Citroen is well-known for its extremely comfortable and sophisticated ride quality from the larger vehicles in its lineup, and in this regard, the C5 X is no disappointment.
After just a few minutes behind the wheel of the C5 X, you’ll notice how nicely-cushioned the suspension is over the bumps, how effortless the steering is and how quiet the ride is, even on rougher surfaces that make it a wonderful option for long-distance journeys and short hops around town.
Power comes supplied by a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pushes out 133kW of power and 250Nm of torque to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, which makes the C5 X more refined and comfortable touring than outright speed.
Having said that, though, the engine is motivated enough to push you up to speed relatively quickly, although it’s clear to see Citroen’s emphasis on comfort rather than pace, which has paid dividends when it comes to driving on Australian roads.
Around town, the lightweight steering rack makes parking and low-speed turns a simple task while offering a decent amount of feedback as you pick up speed, while the wonderful suspension package irons out bumps on the road in a fashion very much on par with the most comfortable SUVs on the road.
Is it Practical and Spacious?
Stepping inside the C5 X greets the driver and front passenger with a stylish and very unique interior design that Citroen is famous for.
All the familiar cabin elements are there, albeit with a fresh French flare that gives the C5 X a charming and premium feel that you won’t find anywhere else on the market.
The front of the cabin is extremely spacious with a decent amount of headroom on offer, and a large central tunnel sitting between the driver and front passenger that houses a pair of cupholders, a large storage tray behind the gear lever, a small tray for keys and storage inside a large folding armrest that make the C5 X an absolute beast when it comes to practicality.
Move to the second row and you’ll find acres of legroom for rear passengers, with the C5 X able to eat up tall adults without a problem, with no complaints in terms of headroom, either.
The second row gains a set of air vents, USB ports, seatback storage, and a set of door bins on either side of the cabin, as well as a pair of ISOFIX anchors and top tether mounts to help accommodate forward and rear-facing child seats.
Finally, the Citroen C5 X has a boot measuring in at 545L which expands to 1640L with the second row folded down, giving it some serious practicality chops when it comes to accommodating a family of five, and their belongings.
Is it Safe?
The Citroen C5 X is yet to be officially tested by ANCAP, however, the company is looking to sweeten the deal with a generous amount of active safety technologies to win over buyers.
As standard, the C5 X comes packing an autonomous emergency braking system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, multi-collision braking, an active bonnet, surround-view camera with parking sensors, and lane-keep assistance.
Is it Fuel Efficient?
Citroen’s 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder returns fuel economy figures of 6.0L per 100km on a combined cycle, which means that it is impressively fuel efficient for a vehicle of this size, and betters the majority of the SUV segment.
Our Verdict: Is the Citroen C5 X Worth it?
The Citroen C5 X is a wonderful addition to the large car segment and is a perfect option for buyers looking for a sleek, premium, practical and exceptionally comfortable family wagon.
As a package, the C5 X feels fresh and personable both on the inside and out, while the clever interior designs make it more than spacious enough for large families, giving buyers an option over an SUV body shape.
As a result, we can’t help but recommend you add the C5 X to your shortlist if you’re in the market for a premium, comfortable and practical wagon that rivals the space on offer in an SUV.
