Chrysler

Chrysler, one of America’s original ‘Big Three’ automakers, has produced influential vehicles like the 300 sedan, widely admired in Australia.

Founded in 1925, Chrysler built a legacy of sedans, performance cars, SUVs, and minivans. Now part of Stellantis, it operated locally under Fiat-Chrysler Automotive (FCA) until its departure from the Australian market in late 2021, marking the end of an era for the brand down under.

Chrysler FAQs

Officially, Fiat-Chrysler confirmed it would be leaving the Australian market in late 2021, stating that customer demands for fuel-efficient engines, hybrid and fully-electric vehicles means the company neded to reevaluate its operations here in Australia.

While Chrysler no longer sells vehicles here in Australia the company continues to import parts and maintain a healthy servicing network for its existing customers, to ensure they can have their vehicle serviced with OEM parts at a Jeep dealership.

Chrysler’s parent company, Stellantis, announced that it would cease sales of the 300 sedan here in Australia in late 2021, stating that it is more important for the company to create the next generation of electrified and fuel-efficient SUVs, rather than stick with its V8 powered 300 - the last member of the Chrysler family to be sold here in Australia.

To be clear, Chrysler never stopped making cars in Australia because its vehicles were manufactured overseas, primarily in the United States, where they were imported to Australia for local sales.

Chrysler has invested significant money into its manufacturing facilities to ensure a high level of quality control and reliability from their cars.

In the latest J.D. Power Dependability Study from 2022, Chrysler ranked in the lower-third of major manufacturers, signalling that some of its vehicles were reporting more problems-per-100-vehicles than the industry average of 186, with a score of 226 PP100.

It’s difficult to judge a Chrysler’s reliability over time from such a small set of data, though, with the company enjoying a reasonable reputation for its vehicles over time.

While Chrysler and Dodge are both subsidiaries of the Stellantis group, they are separate entities operating under the same parent company. Chrysler and Ford remain major rivals within the US market, with many of their main products going head-to-head in certain segments.

While Chrysler has stopped making cars for export to the Australian market, it remains one of the largest manufacturers in the United States and is still producing hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year.

Chrysler’s product lineup in the United States market includes the 300 and 300C, the Voyager, Pacifica minivan and the Pacifica Hybrid.
