Is it Comfortable to Drive?
The Audi Q3 offers a higher riding position than the car it is based on, giving the driver the benefits of a raised driving position in a relatively small package. Overall, the base model Q3 is a supremely comfortable compact SUV, and the flagship RSQ3’s adaptive damper system allows the driver to select the quality of the ride they’re looking for. The entry-level 35 TFSI has a modest power output, so if you’re looking to get up and moving quickly, you’re probably best suited for the 40 TFSI which receives a more powerful engine, but keep in mind that the economy figure will rise.
A common complaint of compact SUVs is that they’re not the most comfortable car on the road, mostly due to their small proportions. In this respect, Audi has created an extremely comfortable urban cruiser that is perfect for work commutes and a weekend away. The cabin is extremely quiet, with Audi’s attention to driver and passenger comfort clearly on display. The Q3 is easy to drive, simple to park and can navigate the tight confines of a car park with ease, meaning it’s the perfect companion for a run around the urban jungle. The smooth transmission takes care of the gears without a problem, offering seamless shifts that you’ll barely feel behind the wheel. All up, the Q3 is a comfortable and competent compact SUV that clearly separates itself from its competitors in terms of relaxing driving dynamics.
Is it Practical and Spacious?
Audi is widely known as one of the leading manufacturers of comfortable, high-quality interiors, and the Q3 is no exception. The driver is treated to a large digital dashboard, while the passengers can use the entertainment and navigation on the 10.1-inch infotainment system housed in a sophisticated and modern interior aesthetic. The front of the cabin is extremely spacious, welcoming the driver and front passenger into a set of comfortable seats with a host of storage spots for loose items. The side doors can accommodate large drink bottles, with two more cup holders on offer in the centre of the cabin.
One of the most common complaints that compact SUVs receive is that very few can actually accommodate passengers larger than children in the rear of the cabin. Thanks to Audi’s clever packaging, the rear seats of the Q3 can comfortably seat fully-grown adults with enough head and leg room for a long journey without complaints. The Q3 also has easily-accessible ISOFIX mounts for child seats with doors that open wide for easy installation. In terms of cargo storage, there is a massive boot for the compact SUV market, with more than 530L of boot space in the rear of the Q3.
Overall, the Q3 will have no trouble in accommodating a family and their belongings for a holiday road trip, or a trip to the supermarket with the back seats brimming with kids.
Is it Safe?
The Audi Q3 has been awarded ANCAP’s maximum five-star safety rating, with the base model packed with a number of key safety features. As standard, the Q3 35 TFSI includes hill descent control, autonomous emergency braking, parking system with front and rear sensors and a rear-view camera, cruise control, lane departure warning and lane change assist. A number of key safety features like the surround-view camera, semi-autonomous parking assist and adaptive cruise control, however, are reserved for the more expensive variants, so if you’re looking for a full safety suite, be prepared to pay extra.
Is it Fuel Efficient?
Audi’s Q3 range features three different engine options, with economy figures ranging from acceptable to moderately thirsty, compared to its competitors. The base, and most economical model, is rated at 7.2L per 100km, while the mid-range variant returns figures of 8.2L per 100km, and the range-topper rated at 8.9L per 100km. Considering there are a number of compact SUVs on the market that return figures anywhere.
Our Verdict: Is the Audi Q3 Worth it?
Typically with compact SUVs, owners are required to make some sacrifices, usually in the form of reduced practicality and comfort in the rear of the cabin. The Q3, however, goes to prove that compact SUVs can truly be comfortable and accommodate a family and their belongings. The Q3 is an extremely competent compact SUV that will impress new owners with its looks, technology, practicality, safety and comfort on the road.
